It was an unforgettable and meaningful experience. Rather than visiting typical tourist spots, our school organized a trip with a deeper significance and purpose. We embarked on a journey to explore the historic and cultural locations mentioned in “Tamilar Aindinaigal.” The trip has been filled with excitement and discovery, allowing us to connect with our rich heritage and learn more about the ancient traditions that shaped our culture. Each location offered a unique glimpse into the past, making this experience both educational and inspiring.
The mountains and mountain-related areas are classified under the Kurinji landscape.
The forests and forest-related lands are classified under the Mullai landscape (the land between the mountains and the fields is considered forest).
The fields and field-related lands are classified as Marudham.
The barren land located between these two landscapes is referred to as Palai.
The sea and sea-related areas are called Neithal.
- 2018 KAAYAR VILLAGE (MARUDHAM)
In 2018, we traveled to KAAYAR Village, which is located in the Chengalpat district and is recognized as MARUDAM in the book. We were awestruck by the lush greenery and serene surroundings of the village. We spent more hours there, interacting with the locals and learning about their way of life.
We visited a local farm and learned about sustainable farming practices and the importance of supporting local agriculture. We even got to participate in some of the farm work, which was a great hands-on experience.

In 2019, we visited to KORATUR ANAIKATTU, which is located in the Thiruvallur district and is recognized as PAALAI in the book. The vast expanse of arid terrain, encompassed by nothing but dry sand and devoid of any human presence, initially filled us with trepidation. However, as we immersed ourselves in this new and unfamiliar environment, we discovered it to be an enriching and enlightening experience. Despite only spending a few hours there, we were fortunate enough to interact with the locals and gain insight into their unique way of life.
- 2020 PALAVERKADU (NEIDHAL)
In 2020, we ventured out to PALAVERKADU, a coastal village that is identified as NEIDHAL in the book. The village is known for its rich cultural heritage and the beautiful temples that adorn its landscape. We explored the village, visited the temples, and enjoyed the local cuisine, which was a unique blend of traditional and modern flavors.
It was an eye-opening experience to see firsthand the impact of human actions on the environment and the importance of conservation. We also visited a community school, where we learned about the work being done to support marginalized communities in the area. We participated in some community service activities, which gave us a sense of fulfillment and a desire to continue giving back to our society.
- 2023 HAMLET IN JAWADU HILL (KURINJI)
In 2023, we visited a hamlet located in Jawadu hill, identified as KURUNJI in the book. The hamlet is situated in the midst of dense forests and is known for its beautiful Kurinji flowers that bloom only once in twelve years. We are eagerly looking forward to our journey to this beautiful place, and we hope to learn more about the culture and traditions of the people who live there.
Experiencing the natural beauty of a place that is situated at an altitude of 3500 feet above sea level, 270 kilometers away from where you live, can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And when you get to know the people who call that place their home, it can be an even more enriching experience. Reflecting on the journey we have taken in this school, I feel a sense of relief that I have given the best to my children. I believe that exposing them to different cultures and experiences has broadened their horizons and made them more well-rounded individuals. And this particular trip to the 3500-feet-above-sea-level location has been no exception.
- 2024 HAMLET IN HARUR DHARMAPURI (MULLAI)
This year, we have planned an enriching journey to a forest hamlet nestled in the Dharmapuri district. Our aim is to meet and interact with the traditional forest dwellers, gaining insight into their unique way of life. This visit will provide us with an opportunity to learn about their rich cultural heritage, deep connection with nature, and the traditional knowledge they have preserved for generations. It’s an experience that promises to be both educational and inspiring, allowing us to appreciate the harmony in which they live with their environment.
Overall, the school field trip with a different thought was a refreshing change from the usual trips and left a lasting impression on us. It was a great opportunity to learn and grow as individuals, and we look forward to more such experiences in the future.
